Is He Hiding Something from You During Your Virginia Divorce?

June 10, 2011 By HofheimerFamilyLaw

In a Virginia divorce, both spouses are required to be open and honest regarding all their financial holdings and property. Unfortunately, not everyone is truthful when it comes to his or her assets. Hiding assets is not an uncommon behavior.

It can be painful to think your husband would be dishonest with you during an already difficult time for both of you, but you need to be aware of the possibility.

People hide assets for many reasons, but usually because they want to leave the marriage with as much money as possible, and because, out of spite, they want to deny their spouse their fair share. In some cases, the secrecy around finances and assets was a part of the marriage for a long time, and contributed to marital breakdown.

If you think your husband may be hiding assets during your Virginia divorce, it’s a serious matter that needs to be looked into. If he has more assets than he’s showing and he’s not found out, you can end up being cheated out of what is rightfully yours in the Virginia divorce.

When it comes to hiding assets, people can use various strategies. They may transfer money to a family member’s name, have secret accounts of their own, or falsify information on financial documents. These methods are not always easy to detect.

During your divorce, your attorney can help you determine whether your husband is hiding assets. He or she can examine important financial documents and keep an eye out for any clues that might point to suspicious activity.

Contacting a Virginia Divorce Attorney

The decision to file for divorce usually comes at the end of a long and painful journey. In addition to the emotional turmoil involved, there’s also a lot of fear and uncertainty about what the future holds. Concerns about children, mortgages, and even just paying the bills or buying groceries can easily become overwhelming.

A divorce attorney at Hofheimer Family Law Firm can examine the specifics of your case to help you decide how much support to ask for, what child custody arrangement will work best for you and your children, and how to fairly divide your marital assets. Request a FREE copy of our divorce book for women in Virginia, or reserve your seat at our monthly divorce seminar – 757-425-5200.
