Revenge Isn’t The Answer In a Virginia Divorce

Posted on Mar 18, 2011 by Hofheimer Family Law

Even if your Virginia divorce is over, you probably still have strong feelings about your ex-spouse and the way your marriage ended.

Revenge is a common theme associated with break-ups in general and divorce in particular
. The vengeful, angry ex is a classic character in books, movies, and theater for a reason. Most of us have had at least a brief impulse toward vengeance against an ex at some point in our lives.

In a Virginia divorce, you’ve lost a person you once loved, and as a result endured some major life changes. In some cases, your ex may have done something hurtful and cruel to you. The emotional pain and stress of this situation might make you consider taking revenge against your ex-husband.

While revenge fantasies may be satisfying to you now and again after your Virginia divorce, bringing those fantasies into reality is a very different story. Revenge tends to create a vicious cycle, which can sometimes lead to irrational or violent behavior.

If you’re in the midst of a divorce in Virginia, vengeful actions against your ex-spouse can severely damage your credibility and harm your Virginia divorce case. If you have children with your ex-spouse, revenge will cause a deeper rift in the family structure and set a bad example for your kids. In some cases, it may also lead to the court making child custody decisions that aren’t favorable to you.

Rather than seeking revenge after your Virginia divorce, “get back” at your spouse in the only way that truly works: by rebuilding your life and being happy.
