Amicable Divorce in Virginia: Is it Possible?

Posted on Apr 30, 2012 by Hofheimer Family Law

Divorces are often complicated because there are many decisions to make, such as property allocation, living arrangements and child custody. On top of that, there are many negative emotions throughout the course of a divorce. However, there are some ways to have an amicable divorce for the sake of your children.

First, you and your spouse should decide the terms of your Virginia divorce. You should be able to come to an agreement without having the judge step in. Hire a mediator if there are some issues that you simply cannot agree upon. Leaving the judge control over any aspect will just make the process much more difficult for you and your children.

Although it can be difficult, try to see both sides of the story. Try to put yourself in your spouse’s shoes. By seeing things through his or her point of view, you can learn to negotiate more fairly and have a friendly divorce.

Last, but not least, you should take care of your health. Divorce can be emotionally draining, so don’t forget to take care of yourself. Eating and sleeping well and engaging in stress relief techniques can help you feel better about yourself and leave you less likely to snap.
