Your company announces that you’ll be getting a new boss – depending on the situation (and the person) you may either jump for joy or find yourself fearing the change. No matter what the reason for the change in leadership, you’ll need to be prepared. How you handle your new boss can affect your career and working environment so it’s important to start off on the right foot. These guidelines can keep you smooth sailing with your new captain.
Set Up an Introductory Meeting – If he or she hasn’t already, scheduled a one-on-one with your new boss to introduce yourself. This is a great way to show initiative and also establish what kind of relationship you’ll have. Keep in mind that they will probably be pretty busy the first week on the job so keep it brief or wait until things have calmed down a bit.
Make a Good Impression – Come in early, stay late, help out with projects and offer to show your new boss around the office. You don’t have to brown-nose or be fake but your chances of being remembered in a favorable way are increased if you make yourself more noticeable from the start.
Don’t Pass Judgment Too Quickly – Remember, starting any new job can be stressful especially when heading up a new group of unfamiliar people or a new company. Give your new boss some time to work out the kinks before you make up your mind.
