The Surprising Effect of the Bad Economy on Virginia Divorce

Posted on Mar 4, 2011 by Hofheimer Family Law

Numerous factors can contribute to a Virginia divorce, including financial issues. While many couples have felt the burden of financial setbacks because of the poor economy, there may be unexpected positive effects of the recession on marriage.

The recession is causing a decline in divorce rates, and many couples are learning to lean on each other and strengthen their marriages in the face of financial struggles.
The National Marriage Project (NMP) reports that 29% of Americans feel that the recession has deepened their commitment to marriage.

In addition, the NMP sheds light on how divorce plans have changed because of the economic downturn. It was reported that 38% of Americans that were contemplating divorce before the recession decided to put aside their divorce plans because of the recession.

While this is welcomed news, the divorce rates will likely begin to climb again as the economy stabilizes. The divorce rate fell during the recession but is picking up, according to NPR, as it’s been known to do after an economic depression.

If you’re struggling with finances and concerned over the state of your marriage, the first step may be to seek marriage counseling to see if you and your husband are able to work through your differences.

If, however, you feel that filing for a Virginia divorce may still be on the horizon, you’ll want to talk about your situation with an experienced Virginia divorce attorney and discuss any financial concerns you have. If the bad economy has forced you to delay your divorce plans, know that you’re not the only one.
