Whenever I tell someone what I do for a living, they tell me how sad or depressing that must be. I’m always surprised, even though by now I probably shouldn’t be. While it’s sad to think about a happy marriage ending, those aren’t the kinds of marriages I see. I see marriages where women are unhappy, unfulfilled, or even, in the worst cases, abused. For whatever reason, things just aren’t working and aren’t likely to just magically start working.
It’s true that the initial appointment is often very sad. However bad the marriage was, most women are heartbroken at the thought of ending it. With the end of the marriage comes the loss of the shared hopes and dreams for the future, as well as unique financial challenges.
These women have spent a number of years investing in a relationship, including building a home and raising a family, that ultimately isn’t working out.
Still, the woman I see at the beginning of the process is different than the woman I see at the end—and the woman at the end is the reason why I (and other family law attorneys) still want to come to work every day. It’s uplifting, it’s inspiring, and it’s encouraging to see how, facing such difficult obstacles, we can adapt, overcome, and thrive.
That’s why we started hosting our Girl’s Night Out event series. We wanted to give our potential, current, and former clients a chance to meet each other, socialize, and network. It’s a chance to make new friends and connect with other local women.
Our last Girl’s Night Out event was March 26th at Eurasia, and we had an incredible turnout! One of our current clients showed us her new tattoo, which she got when she moved out. It means “new beginnings,” and she really embodies the kind of positive attitude and inner strength that we’re always trying to promote. We also had a woman present who attended our Custody Bootcamp for Moms, fought for custody of her children without hiring an attorney, and won! Talk about an incredible story! We had tons of professional women present, including mortgage consultants, financial advisors, therapists, parenting seminar coordinators, swim coaches, teachers, attorneys, executives, and lots of others who were there to hear each other’s stories, share in their successes, and plan for the future.
Our next Girl’s Night Out event will be April 23rd from 6-8pm at Croc’s in Virginia Beach. We’ll have some great giveaways, free drinks, and some happy hour snacks to share with you. It’s completely free, so what do you have to lose? Bring a girlfriend or two and come join us! It’ll be a great night out, and an opportunity to get to know some of our friends.
